Another landscape painter that demands greater attention than he has been given to date is Gonzalo Escalante (1865-1939) Based on what little is known of him, I would denote containment as a fundamental element in his work. Escalante is a precisely measured artist; nothing is lacking or excess on his canvases. There is an equilibrium of tact and discretion. A sober, contained poetry is unraveled in those impeccable landscapes I am sure that Gonzalo Escalantes work will rise in prestige as he is studied.
